Geneva Gaines was born in Cook Springs, Alabama, on December 21, 1886. At age three, she became a Sacred Harp
singer, and at age seven she attended music school in Cook Springs. Her father was A.S. Perry, a well-known
Sacred Harp singer who worked for Southern Railroad.
